SPOTLIGHT: Titan Internet Radio - Cal State Fullerton

"Our staff has made it a point this school year to encourage ideas to flow freely throughout the station. Since we’re all in college, we have so much room to grow. We have so much room for trial and error and we have nothing too big to lose. Titan Radio is the one place where a lot of us can freely express ourselves and try new ways of doing things."

Titan Internet Radio - Cal State Fullerton

Briefly describe to us your organization. What is your mission?
Titan Internet Radio is Cal State Fullerton’s official radio station. We are run by students, for the students. We have 7 student staff members, about 70 volunteer DJs, and over 50 members on our Street Team. Our mission is for our station to be used as a creative outlet for all students. No matter what major or background, we want to help get their voices heard. We embrace all genres, all topics, and all types of programming.

What is your role in the organization?
I am currently the General Manager of Titan Radio.

In three words, what’s your organization’s personality (either now or what you aspire to)?
Eclectic, Passionate, Evolving.

Who has made a tremendous impact on you as a leader? Describe how this person has influenced your life?
Roslynn Cobarrubias. She’s the first person who comes to my mind because although I’ve only personally known her for one year, I’ve learned so much! The passion she has for her craft literally exudes out of her and onto everyone around her – and that is exactly the kind of leader and person I hope to be.

How are creative thinking & social responsibility encouraged and sustained within your organization?
Our organization is literally overflowing with amazing and creative ideas every single day. We’re basically the artsy/hipster/music snobs of Cal State Fullerton (for a lack of a better term).

Our staff has made it a point this school year to encourage ideas to flow freely throughout the station. Since we’re all in college, we have so much room to grow. We have so much room for trial and error and we have nothing too big to lose. Titan Radio is the one place where a lot of us can freely express ourselves and try new ways of doing things.

And as far as social responsibility goes, we make sure that no ideas or styles of music are put down. From K-Pop, to folk music, to electronic music, to sports talk, to comic talk, and so much more – we are here to foster these ideas. We are here to spread a message. And as much as we aim to be a professional radio station, at the end of the day, we’re all just a bunch of kids who love music and love what we do.

In what ways can your organization collaborate with Asian American musicians & artists?
There are so many ways! Since our DJs hand pick our music for their shows, songs by all different kinds of artists from all different places are played every single day. We also host Titan Radio Live (created by our awesome Marketing Director, Sara Kleinbart), where we record live bands next door to us at the Titan TV station. Asian American artists and artists of any background get recorded and featured on our website.

Our one condition: that their music is made with integrity. That’s all we can really ask.

Where would you like to see this organization by the time your graduate?
By the time I graduate I hope to see Titan Radio with an expanded, dedicated audience. I want people to know that we’re out there and that our programming is full of talented, passionate, and eclectic radio DJs who love what they do. I hope to one day strike up a conversation with a random person, bring up Titan Radio, and hear them say “Hey, I’ve listened to Titan Radio! I discovered _______ on one of their shows!” Even something as simple as that – because then I’d know for a fact that our station has made an impact.

Upcoming Event:
On December 10th, Titan Radio will be hosting our semi-annual DJ mixer! Except instead of calling it a mixer this semester, we’re having a benefit concert featuring local bands from the Orange Country area. All proceeds will go back to helping Titan Radio purchase new equipment so we can replace our old and outdated equipment.
